Governor of Alabama celebrates controversial IVF statute passed last year

The celebration from Ivey provoked concern from Christians and conservatives, many of whom noted that IVF procedures generally involve mass discarding, selectively aborting, or indefinitely freezing preborn babies.

Alabama Republican Governor Kay Ivey celebrated the one-year anniversary of a controversial law in the state that provided blanket criminal and civil immunity for everyone involved in IVF.

The legislation to protect the fertility procedure, in which a sperm and egg are artificially joined outside of the womb and implanted into the uterus of a woman, was signed in March of last year to offer immunity for “death or damage to an embryo” for anyone who provides or receives IVF.

“One year ago today, I signed legislation to protect IVF in Alabama,” Ivey commented in a statement last week commemorating the legislation. “Families across our state have since welcomed babies into this world through IVF. Alabama is proudly pro-life and pro-family!”
