Republican members of the House Judiciary Committee launched an investigation into an entity called the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights, also called CHIRLA, for allegedly funding the violent riots in Los Angeles earlier this month.

The lawmakers revealed that CHIRLA took almost $1 million in taxpayer-funded grants between 2021 and 2023, which came before they hosted a rally this month against Immigration and Customs Enforcement as the agency worked to deport illegal aliens in Los Angeles.

The funds were purportedly spent on “citizenship instruction and naturalization services” as well as “innovations in citizenship education.” The lawmakers asked that CHIRLA surrender “all documents and communications” related to funds taken by the organization.

CHIRLA said the group has not “participated, coordinated, or been part of the protests being registered in Los Angeles” beyond a rally and a press conference. The organization has also sent legal observers to “immigration courts and detention centers.”
