Trump settles Ashli Babbitt wrongful death lawsuit for $5 million

The settlement marks a shift in stance regarding the events of January 6: under the previous administration, the Justice Department had determined there was not sufficient evidence to pursue civil rights charges against Byrd.

Trump administration officials have reached a nearly $5 million settlement with the family of Ashli Babbitt in their wrongful death lawsuit stemming from the January 6 incursion at the United States Capitol.

Babbitt, who served in the Air Force, was shot and killed by Capitol Police Lieutenant Michael Byrd while attempting to climb through a broken window into the Speaker's Lobby. This settlement comes after the Biden administration fought against the family’s legal claims.

Filed earlier this year, the lawsuit sought $30 million in damages for the death. Justice Department attorneys have now agreed in principle to the settlement terms, with roughly one-third of the payout designated for legal expenses, including attorneys from Judicial Watch and lawyer Richard Driscoll.
