Senior state and federal officials responded to a series of drone sightings in New Jersey and across the northeastern United States which have been reaching national headlines.

Dozens of witnesses have reported seeing unusual drone activity in recent weeks. New Jersey Democratic Governor Phil Murphy said that he received a briefing from FBI officials tasked with examining the drone sightings and vowed that “we are ready to assist the federal government in getting to the bottom of this,” while New York Democratic Governor Kathy Hochul added that “our federal partners are deploying a state-of-the-art drone detection system” to the state.

Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas remarked that the agency “quickly deployed personnel and technology” to investigate the drones alongside the FBI. “To date, there is no known threat posed by these sightings,” the official continued. “If a threat is identified, the federal government will address it and communicate with the American public about it.”

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, a Democrat from New York, indeed called on the Department of Homeland Security to deploy “special drone detection” technology, adding that he would pass a bill in the Senate “to give local law enforcement more tools for drone detection.”

The drones were at first seen flying along the Raritan River in New Jersey, but were soon seen statewide and near the ocean. Coast Guard officials reported that several drones followed one of their lifeboats over the weekend, while some have been seen over Trump National Golf Club.

FBI officials said in a joint statement with the Department of Homeland Security that they have “no evidence at this time that the reported drone sightings pose a national security or public safety threat or have a foreign nexus,” adding that they are seeking to confirm whether the drones “are actually drones or are instead manned aircraft or otherwise inaccurate sightings.”

“Historically, we have experienced cases of mistaken identity, where reported drones are, in fact, manned aircraft or facilities,” the statement said. “We are supporting local law enforcement in New Jersey with numerous detection methods but have not corroborated any of the reported visual sightings with electronic detection. To the contrary, upon review of available imagery, it appears that many of the reported sightings are actually manned aircraft, operating lawfully.”
